August 13

Well we must start by mentioning the fantastic weather that has bestowed the Islands for the whole month which has given us a full harbour for most of this time as well as seeing many vessels anchored just outside our limits due to the easterly breezes. At times our forty visitor’s moorings have had more than one vessel on meaning most of our time has been spent carrying out the various tasks created by so many guests. Many different commercial vessels visited the harbour during this time which is detailed in our ‘visiting ships’ section including our first ever day hosting three cruise ships at one time. A large attraction earlier in the month saw the RNLI organise a water carnival based in the harbour the main event being, of course, a raft race. With some rather well engineered entries, it certainly seems, by the many photos at least, that a god time was had by all. I also understand a decent amount of money was raised to enable the RNLI to continue their good work which included one call out this month to recover a 42ft wooden ketch from a few miles off. The vessel had broken its rudder and sat alongside our inner berths for a day or two whilst repairs were carried out. After a continued effort to keep Porthloo boat park neat and tidy for the Islands tourists (the lack of rain may have helped somewhat) we are looking forward to works being carried out this winter to include the installation of electricity and water bollards and the building of a new slipway… watch this space…
