August 2011

Apart from the scheduled visits from cruise ships such as ‘Le Diamant’, the Sea Cadet training ship ‘Royalist’ spent a night alongside. An 83grt, 29.52 LOA sailing ship, she normally carries 24 sea cadets as well as her 6 permanent crew.

The gaff ketch ‘Bessie Ellen’ also paid a visit towards the end of August. Similar in proportions to the Royalist, she was built much earlier, in 1904, and was on a bank holiday escape to the Islands.

HMS Raider and HMS Tyne popped in at separate ends of the month and August ended with the Coastguard tug Anglian Princess anchored in St Mary’s Roads.

Seven cruise ship visits are planned for September- the last for the year. We expect the number of visiting yachts to slowly decrease also as we start the transition into our winter season.
